Synthesis of Cardanol-Based Acetaldehyde Novolac Resin from Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL)

Polymers are currently in the limelight. Phenolic resin is one of polymer products obtained from polymerization process, either natural or synthetic sources. One compounds that can be applied to polymers cardanol. This study aimed synthesize cardanol-based acetaldehyde novolac Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL). Isolation cardanol CNSL was done by liquid-liquid extraction method with acetone and purified gravity column chromatography a mixture n-hexane ethyl acetate ratio 9:1. HPLC analysis showed had aliphatic chains different levels saturation yield 18.48%. The cardanol-acetaldehyde synthesized through condensation reaction mole (1:0.5), using HCl as catalyst. FTIR 1H-NMR were employed identify structure. product brownish-orange solid 12.80 mg (40%) followed ortho-ortho substitution. Cardanol phenol sources might utilized manufacture resins.
